Probably my biggest complaint about the game, it’s length. Pick up the basics instantly if you’re familiar with chess, or learn in minutes if you aren’t. Pawnbarian helps out the player a lot, by showing which space is dangerous, how many hits you can get there, also you can see where you could move and what the monsters abilities are. Soundtrack is nothing special, but fits for the game. The graphics are simple, but the characters and monsters are good looking. It doesn’t seem much, but there are different enemies with their own ability and the different starter characters has their own rules to play, so you can have different challenges most of the time. Once you defeat every enemy on the board, you can buy new pieces from the gold you earn from the floor and basically this gameplay repeats. Getting to the floor you get a small chess board with monsters to slay and in your hand, there are 3 cards from your deck with chess pieces and you use these to move on the board, depending what piece is on the card. The base idea is pretty good: you can choose different characters at the beginning, which they have different starting pieces and ability. Use a deck of chess pieces to hack and slash through hordes of monsters. Pawnbarian is taking the basic rules of chess and mix it with roguelike game elements: your goal is to conquer a 7 level dungeon by getting new chess pieces to your deck to use.
It is undeniable that the game content of this game is not much for the time being, but the design of the gameplay has great potential, and I look forward to its continued improvement.
